Are there easy ways to reduce credit card debt?
Posted on June 7th, 2010 No commentsCredit card debt is something that can seem to hang over people for a long time without anything being done about it. Sometimes the debt seems so large that it is hard to do anything about it. However there are ways to reduce credit card debt that although are not painless are fairly simple to understand.
The first two things that need to be done are to make conscious decisions. The first decision is that the debt needs to be paid off. Once this is decided then other decisions become easier. The next decision that needs to be made is that less money will be spent each month than is made. As long as this is done then the debts will reduce each month and there will always be a feeling of progress. After this there are a number of systems for reducing credit card debt. The one that is most effective is paying off credit card debt is to concentrate on the highest interest rate and then pay this debt off before the others. Minimum payments should be made on the other credit cards and debts.
Doing this means that the debts with the highest interest are paid off before all other debts which in turn maximises the actual debt that is paid off and minimises the interest that is paid off. This method will use the lowest possible amount of money and will pay off debts in the shortest possible time. Although it is a very effective method to pay off debt it is often not kept up with.
There is an alternative to the use of credit cards. This is the lowest debts method, which means that the lowest debts are paid off first regardless of the interest rate that these debts are charged. This has the psychological advantage of giving an early sense of momentum. Many people who fall into debt can find that the sense of helplessness is one of the main reasons that they do not deal with debt. This method can give back some confidence.
Balance transfers and the use of other credit cards should not be done as a first step if there is debt. This can mean that the credit card problem is ignored rather than dealt with, and the debt gets worse with the increased borrowing capacity. The same goes for consolidation loans.
